Following the Ice Storm of 2008, millions of people in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic America were left without power for months. Here in north-central Massachusetts, people who were left in the dark continued to be billed by the nearby electrical and gas company, Unitil. For the years after the Ice Storm, Unitil has been accused of unfairly threatening people of turning off their power when they may not be home or when the electricity is being used.
Multiple upset customers over the decade have complained about the aggravating poor service and high prices that Unitil charges them. All of these people do not have a way out of Unitil charging them because even the power lines are owned by Unitil. People in Fitchburg who live in apartments are forced to use Until as their electrical and gas outlet, which gives Unitil the power to charge those people whatever they like. Especially in the Ice Storm of 2008, the customer service of Unitil was poor and unresponsive for many families who were without power. The company is more concerned with profits than with maintaining infrastructure like power lines. Unitil has the highest utility rates in the entire state by an unreasonable margin, and change is needed.
We call on the Massachusetts Attorney General to force Unitil to lower thier insanely high utility rates.
