In 2014, federal subsidies for flood insurance were allowed to lapse causing exponential increases in premiums each year. For example, in 2011, Austie’s Family Restaurant paid $3,300 in flood Insurance premiums. This was the same year of the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Lee. Now, after significant increases each year, Austie’s is expected to pay almost $17,000 in premiums in 2018 due to the lapse in federal subsidies. These extremely high premiums are a heavy financial burden on any small business let alone those faced by local residents. The risk of again facing flooding like that of 2011 is real for businesses and residents in Northeastern Pennsylvania making the ability to afford flood insurance essential. We are asking the federal government to reinstate flood insurance subsidies that will reduce the financial burden of flood insurance premiums.
We, the undersigned, call on the federal government to reinstate federal subsidies that will reduce flood insurance premiums and, in turn, reduce the financial burden on business and residents who have already faced devastating loss from flooding as well as those who are at risk for flooding in the future.
