London Met is being run like a business, staff are encouraged to view their students as customers, and themselves as service providers rather than lecturers. This kind of corporate language is changing the edifice of London Met, the staff and student relationship.
The changes and cuts taking place internally in the university is changing it from a seat of learning to a money making machine.
The emphasis is being taken off quality education and placed on cutting back, saving money and paying off the massive debt the previous Vice Chancellor left behind.
Dear Malcolm,
Your students are demanding change. We feel the university is increasingly being run like a business rather than a seat of learning. While staff are encouraged to view their students as customers you are making savage cuts to vital university services and departments.
As of 2012 students will be charged more per year but will be receiving less in terms of course and module choices and student services. It seems student welfare is being put on the back burner. The emphasis is being taken off quality education and placed on cutting back, saving money and paying off the massive debt the previous Vice Chancellor left behind.
We are not customers. We are students! We are here to learn, grow and gain a valuable education. We do not BUY degrees. We achieve. We won't be treated in this capitalist, consumerist system like cattle.
We are individuals and WE ARE LONDON MET!
