Letter of appeal for greater accessiblity for Special Needs students
- Target:
- Ms Denise Phua Lay Peng
- Region:
- Singapore
We are very heartened by Ms Denise Phua's call for the setting up of a SPED Academy during her third speech at Parliament on "Educating People with Special Needs" on 6 March 2017.
We are also happy that the Compulsory Education Act has been extended to include special needs children by 2019. Currently, children studying in many SPED schools do not have access to taking the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) which allows them to move on to the GCE N/O Levels Examinations . This in turn causes them to lose out on the opportunity of accessing higher education in spite of having the ability to do so.
In this petition, we highlight some of our concerns in the areas of Primary and Secondary education, and also in the areas of higher education for the special needs student in the ITE Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities .

We, the undersigned, call on Ms Denise Phua to appeal , on our behalf , for the creation of additional pathways in more of our SPED schools to access the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and the GCE N/O Levels Examinations. This will pave the way for higher education for more special needs students so that they can maximise their potential and progress to eventually contribute to our society.
