Mindi Messmer, a New Hampshire legislator, environmental activist, and scientist was invited to speak at the 2018 Women's March in Portsmouth. A passionate advocate of clean water and children's health, Mindi is an inspiration to her community and exactly the type of leader the Women's March aspires to elevate. Although she is a candidate for Congress, she agreed not to speak about her campaign, focusing instead of women's health and safety.
A male opponent and his campaign manager found out she was slated to speak and threatened to smear the organizers of the local March to the press if she was not taken off the schedule. Against the wishes of most of the organizers, Mindi was taken off the schedule and told she could not speak by the lead organizer, who happens to be in the same union leadership as the opponent.
This shutting down of women's voice is exactly the action the Women's March is meant to protest against. We are disgusted and infuriated by her opponent's behavior and by the decision to remove her from speaking to the people of our community. Mindi's hard work on behalf of women's rights and environmental safety is something we should shine a light on, not shut down.

We call on the organizers of the Portsmouth Women's March 2018 to restore Mindi Messmer to her speaking role. It is unacceptable that a group of men have conspired to remove a woman activist from a women's activism march using threats and cronyism.
We further call for transparency in the local organizing community to see how decisions about speaking and leadership roles are made in future Marches.
