The DEEP has many important responsibilities in the state of Connecticut including encouraging our youth to appreciate and take care of our environment. With increasing regulations and safeguards impacting the opportunities for children to enjoy the outdoors, they are quickly turning their focus from outside adventures to Television, cell phones, and video games. Lake Beseck provides a unique opportunity for these children to connect with nature in such a way that not every town can offer; fun and adventure on the water. Many families would like to maximize this opportunity for their children but, unfortunately, the window of allowable waterskiing is a small one and does not allow a working parent to come home, prepare their boat, and get the children rounded up for some fun on the lake. This same issue persists on the weekend, although the window is bigger, it is still very restrictive and does not allow time for other obligations like conflicting sports team practices and other events that are commonplace in most families.
In addition to the above, Middlefield seems to be losing the young families that are the future for this town. This difference is evident in the recent closing of an elementary school and vacant businesses around town. Implementing more inviting laws on Lake Beseck is likely to encourage young families to move into town and invest in Middlefield's future.

We, the undersigned, call upon the DEEP to modify the existing waterskiing and speed limit restrictions on Lake Beseck to be more family friendly. Please consider changing the verbiage of the law to allow "waterskiing and speeds under 40 miles per hour from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, during the period of April 1st through November 31st".

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this matter.
