Juneteenth is a historical day to honor and remember African Americans who received their freedoms. It is also recognized as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day. However, on this day June 19, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Gordon Granger, to enslaved African Americans in Texas.
Historically, Texas is identified as the last Confederate state to announce the proclamation after ending the American Civil War.
African Americans continued fighting for their freedom and equality even after voting, fighting wars, educating themselves, building this land, playing sports, becoming entrepreneurs, entertainers, etc. But the deep-rooted existence of trauma has never vanished from our broken hearts and souls.
Independence Day, which is celebrated on the Fourth of July has been recognized as a federal holiday and it commemorates the birth of America and its freedom.
Unfortunately, in 1776 African Americans were enslaved, tortured, oppressed, depressed, lynched, raped, murdered, and subjugated to maltreatment that should have never existed toward mankind.
Freedom is a noun that should allow all United States Citizens equality and justice for all. The disservice of slavery has left huge unhealed wounds within the souls of many African Americans. At this time, I would like for all of our brothers and sisters to join me in recognizing and denouncing the wickedness of oppression while discovering the fresh air of true freedom and its presence for all.
As we approach August 28, this day symbolizes the momentous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. Will you please allow us to rise up, stand up, and breathe while applying our fulfillment of how dreams truly come true.
Together, we can break those chains.
We, the undersigned, call on the United States Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday for African Americans.
