The boating community is concerned regarding the planned permanent removal of the Catawba Island Light Buoy "1". The buoy is located one half mile west of Moore Point on the west shore of Catawba Island.
On February 12, 2014 the US Coast Guard - Ninth District published Summary of Proposed changes to the system of of aids to navigation. Included is the permanent discontinuation of the Catawba Island Lighted Buoy "1" referenced as LLNR 5835 on Chart 14844 and can be found in Volume VII of the Great Lakes Light List. The Coast Guard includes the following language, "Mariners are requested to respond in writing to the District office unless otherwise noted).
It is imperative that we provide a collective voice to the Coast Guard emphasizing the importance of keeping the buoy for all navigating the area.
We, the undersigned, request the US Coast Guard District 9 to keep the Catawba Island Lighted Buoy "1" (LLNR 5834) in operation for the safety of boaters navigating the area.
