Following the closure of St Michael’s School a group of volunteers has been working determinedly to try to purchase the property so that work to restart the main school can commence.
Their plans have suffered a set-back as commercial property agents GVA having agreed purchase terms with the group have now gone back on their word and put the property into the open market.
The people of Tawstock are united in their call for the resumption of the school which has been an integral part of the community for so many years. Brought to Devon during the war to protect children from the dangers of wartime London, the school has always been held in high regard for producing well mannered polite children who have gone on to great things.
We, the undersigned, understand the Tawstock Court Rescue Team have raised 1 million pounds, as agreed by the administrators Grant Thornton to save St Michael's School and Nursery, Tawstock Court, Barnstaple, North Devon.
We value the role the School and Nursery in our community, not only providing childcare and education but also providing a service to our local groups; Brownies, Cubs, Beavers, Scouts, village cricket teams, local rugby and football teams, hosting events for local charities and organisations such as the NCT.
Tawstock Court plays an important part in community life.
We call on North Devon District Council to protect this valuable asset for the community and fight with us to avoid it going into commercial hands for their own profit motives.
The administrators must not be permitted to sell off the property to uncaring commercial interests.
The school has belonged to this community for seventy years and needs its heart and soul returned.
