Thank you to everybody, who signed this petition. It was set up quickly to support John Mitchell's letter to the Wells Journal in July, but does contain a numerical flaw in the section marked 'Petition History and Background', regarding the size of Tesco's proposed extension. Although all the other points are valid, this must weaken this petition.
Furthermore, since the creation of this site, a dedicated web-site has been created on www.savewellssomerset.org, which has similar aims. I therefore intend to close this site and refer other potential signatories to that web-site.
I intend to contact each existing signatory to persuade him/her to sign this new site. Duplication will be avoided as I will remove your names from this petition as you sign the new one. The names of those with whom I have not managed to speak, will be passed on to the savewellssomerset steering group. Thank you.
Approximately ten years ago, after great controversy and soul searching, the route for a Wells Relief Road was finally decided upon and implemented. This was supposedly to improve traffic flow into and around Wells.
Now, suddenly, in order to primarily provide land to enlarge Tesco, it is planned that the original route round Wells be closed! (There is no guarantee of any other large retailer coming here.)
This would adversely affect traffic flow around Wells, particularly if there were an accident in Strawberry Way, in which case, Wells could grind to a halt. Would there then be calls for a relief road for the relief road?
Tesco already has planning permission to extend by 50,000 square feet. The new proposal would more than double this allowance considerably.
The reduced traffic permeablility, combined with the removal of public car-parking and the complete absence of any credible competition to Tesco would be to the detriment of existing traders, shoppers and the town centre generally.
We ask that Mendip District Council rethink its plans.
