Since the 1980's, Sherwood Hall has been run by the district council as a public leisure facility. The facility hosts 2 halls which provide numerous activities including badminton, football, basketball, martial arts, keep fit, tennis etc, it also has a Gymnasium, weights room, changing rooms, toilets and a reception. There is also parking for 50 cars.
The District council are looking to close Sherwood Hall because of the current running costs and the costs of bringing the facility upto modern day standards. Sherwood Hall was originally an army drill hall that was adapted by the council into a leisure facility and most of it's members accept the fact that it is not a purpose built leisure centre, and therefore does not have to live upto the modern day expectations. Without this facility, many of it's members would need to make a 10 mile round trip to the nearest leisure centre, many of who are children.
The council have estimated that the costs involved in bringing this leisure facility upto modern day standards would be £331,000. THIS FIGURE IS ESTIMATED.
The council are reluctant to spend any of the council tax payers money on Sherwood Hall as a new £7-10 Million leisure centre is in the pipeline to be built within the next 2-3 Years. This proposed centre is still yet to be given the green light and therefore the council can not give the members of the public an accurate timescale of when it will be built and opened.
I am asking members of the public in the Matlock area to sign this petition and hopefully keep our only leisure centre open until further facilities are made available.
Please forward this to as many people as you know in the Matlock area.
We, the undersigned, call upon the Derbyshire Dales District Council to cancel their plans to close Sherwood Hall in Matlock until the new leisure centre is opened.
