High school hockey has been a part of Fairbanks for generations. As a former hockey cheerleader, wife of a high school hockey alumni, and mother of a high school hockey player, I believe it is important to keep high school hockey alive for the generations to come.
As of this summer the Fairbanks North Star School District ended the high school hockey program in Fairbanks. The district stated that current club hockey programs were sufficient and high schools no longer needed to have teams.
I find that the experiences between high school hockey and club hockey are completely different.
High school hockey encourages pride in one’s school. Academic expectations for participation. Rules and regulations that are enforced regarding bullying and abuses. Community involvement, and honor.
Club hockey is just that, a club. Although club hockey is great for students it will never be the same as high school hockey.
We, the residents and past residents of Fairbanks, Alaska, believe high school hockey is vital to the Fairbanks community. We believe the Fairbanks North Star School District should reverse the decision to discontinue high school hockey in Fairbanks.
