Our Fight Continues, we need your help once again to keep Anvil Nelson’s murderer in prison!
On March 30, 2016, our family and friends will once again travel back to the Centralia, Illinois Correctional Facility in order to object to the parole of Wayne Mikel. Unfortunately, we have to relive the tragedy of the hideous racially motivated murder of our dad, Anvil Nelson Sr. over and over again.
We have appeared before the Parole Board on more than twenty occasions in order to honor our dad’s memory, and on each occasion the twelve member board has not given Wayne Mikel one vote recommending his release. On the night that Anvil Nelson was murdered, Wayne Mikel randomly shot at, and tried to murder, two groups of black people blocks away from one another, before he gunned down our dad with multiple shots. We are thankful that, throughout the years, the Parole Board members have continued to stand in agreement with our family to keep this murderer in prison.
Anvil Nelson Sr. was killed in a drive-by shooting as he walked through downtown Danville, Illinois on November 17, 1977, in what authorities at the time called a random, racially motivated killing. Court testimony indicated that on the night of Anvil Nelson’s murder, Wayne Mikel said to his accomplice, “Let’s go get us a nigger”.
We believe that all life is sacred and that random acts of violence have no place in our society. The murder of Anvil Nelson left behind a wife and four children who have chosen to live life better and not bitter, and who have also chosen to keep up the fight to keep our dad’s murderer in prison. Wayne Mikel was sentenced to 40 – 100 years and we believe that he should serve the sentence that he was given
We are very thankful that our community has continued to support our efforts over the years. Please join us in asking the Parole Board to once again deny Wayne Mikel’s Parole.
Letters opposing Wayne Mikel’s Parole – Ind. No. 77-CF-277 can be sent to:
State of Illinois, Prisoner Review Board, Craig Findley, Chairman, 319 E. Madison Street, Suite A, Springfield IL 62701
We, the Undersigned, request that Parole not be granted to Wayne Mikel.
