Ellis my nephew passed away last year on the 9th May, 13 years, 11 months and 18 days after sustaining life threatening injuries. These injuries were inflicted by a family friend who was looking after Ellis when he was three months old.

On the 9th September 2010 the coroner ruled that Ellis's death was unlawful, as it was directly linked to his initial injuries. However we have no recourse, or justice for Ellis. This is because Ellis was injured in 1995, and in 1995 a 730 year old rule, called the year and a day rule applied. This means that unless Ellis died within a year and a day of the injury then the perpetrator would get off scott free.

Thankfully the law changed in 1996, recognising the fact that medical science can keep people alive for much longer. Gary Andrew Swann served just 12 months of a 2 year sentence for GBH. We are campaigning for Gary to be held accountable for Ellis's death.

We the undersigned call on the UK Government to change the Law Reform (Year and a day rule) Act 1996 to include all persons injured before June 20th 1996.
