Deregulation has led to a massive increase in the supply of taxis, increasing by 377% between deregulation and the end of last year. The demand for taxis, however, has only increased by 5%.
There is a significantly larger volume of taxis competing for only a slightly increased number of passengers. As a result, taxi drivers are being forced to work long hours, which has other implications for road safety.
We are looking for taxi drivers to sign this petition asking the minister for transport Noel Dempsy to cap the industry now for a temporary period and to end unfair competition in the industry which sees a fraction of the industry receiving welfare payments and the another section working in two jobs.
The net result longer and longer hours for the full time Taxi driver totally dependent on the Taxi industry. At the moment going on welfare payment is looking like a better option than working 80 hours and barely making a minimum wage.
We would like the minister to acknowledge that in order to achieve better standards like newer cars, drivers have to be earning a decent income. When decent incomes are not being met standards can only go down.
