On April 25, 2022, Iranian regime’s Revolutionary Court sentenced two award-winning science students – Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi from Sharif University of Technology – to sixteen-year prison sentences for their opposition to the regime. After two years of torture, forced confession and solitary confinement, Iran’s judiciary spokesman said the two are endangering national security.
Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Moradi, a physics student, were arrested without a legal summons in April of 2020. They were held in solitary confinement for two months before being transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence’s (MOIS) Ward 209 in Evin Prison.
In 2017, Younesi and Moradi received the gold and silver medals in the National Astronomy Olympiad. Younesi also won the gold medal at the 12th World Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad. The politically motivated and unjust detention of Moradi and Younesi is yet another example of a systematic pattern of abuse and crimes by the notorious regime in Tehran, fearful of the brightest of Iran’s younger generation.
We the undersigned recognize the proud history of Iran’s student movement, dating back to December 1953, which runs deep in Iranian society against dictatorships of the past and the present. We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, especially the enduring student movement, and call for the unconditional release of Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi.
We urge President Biden, Secretary Blinken, Members of the United States Congress, Secretary General of the United Nations, and The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), as well as all human rights organizations to:
- Speak out in defense of Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi and demand their immediate and unconditional release.
- Press for an urgent visit by international delegations to investigate rights abuse and torture by the regime against students’ activists and political prisoners in Iran.
- Call for the release of all political prisoners in Iran.
- Stand with the Iranian people and their call for democracy and freedom.
