A substantial issue facing GHS and the Board of Education is traffic during arrival and dismissal hours. Without law enforcement or monitoring, drivers continuously double park, make illegal driving maneuvers, and ignore school requests for students to be dropped off in the proper location behind the school. For many years now, Hillside Rd residents, GHS students, parents, and staff have been seeking a solution to the disorganization and congestion that is seen daily at the High School. As of now, the Greenwich Board of Education is still seeking the funding to hire a traffic plan consultant to generate a long term solution. Meanwhile, there is a necessity for a quick and affordable solution that will bring the parents, students, and staff of GHS as well as the residents of Hillside Rd some relief.
Hiring multiple off-duty police officers to monitor traffic at the High School for an entire school year is an immediate solution, but will become an additional expense of over $100,000 per officer/year to the BOE's budget that is already struggling to find the funding for a consultant who could create a solution for the long term. Rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on an impermanent solution, when it could be directed towards funding a long term solution, we should consider an alternative that has a similar effect as hiring off-duty officers but at a much more affordable price.
We, the undersigned, support the development of a community based volunteer program which will allow volunteers from the Junior League of Greenwich and/or graduates of the Citizen's Police Academy to monitor traffic at GHS during arrival and/or dismissal hours. This includes monitoring double parking, illegal maneuvers (such as U-turns and pulling into Hillside resident driveways), and proper pick-up/drop off procedures. Let’s improve the lives of our Hillside Rd. residents and GHS students, parents, and staff by decreasing Hillside Road congestion through increased road monitoring which is affordable, until the Board of Education generates the funding for a permanent resolution.
