Merritt Island has a population of 36,090 as of the 2000 census, making it the fourth most-populated area in Brevard County. With a lack of a municipal government, Merritt Island is left to the administrative care of the County of Brevard.
Smaller governments have a tendency to be more responsive to its constituents, so it would be beneficial for Merritt Island and the rest of the county if it became self-governing. This would allow Merritt Island to worry about matters affecting Merritt Island, and Brevard County to worry about matters affecting the county as a whole.
We, the undersigned, request that Merritt Island be granted a city charter and be permitted to become an autonomous city.
