On September 25, 2015 at about 8:40 am 2 juveniles heading North to Westerguard Elementary School were struck by a vehicle in the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Mae Anne Avenue and Avenida De Landa. Both children were injured in the accident with one having severe head injuries. The driver cited glare from sun impaired his ability to see the children in the crosswalk. The driver was going approximately 20-25 mph.
There are 4 marked crosswalks at this 4 way stop. The posted speed limit is 35 mph. These crosswalks feed Billinghurst Middle School to the south and Westerguard Elementary School to the north. This area does not have school zone speed limits and/or flashing lights. According to the RPD, 12 hours prior to this accident there was another pedestrian/car related incident at the same 4 way stop. The RPD also acknowledged that this is not the first time this has happened to a juvenile.
We, as residences and parents, are fighting to get this intersection recognized as a school zone with reduced speed limits during school time and flashing lights. As this is not going to be if it happens again but when.
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Washoe County School District and the City of Reno, to input safety measures such as reduced speed limits and flashing lights at the crosswalks of the four way stop at Mae Anne Avenue and Avenida De Landa in Reno, Nevada.
These crosswalks serve as the gateway to many children to attend Billinghurst Middle School and Westerguard Elementary School. At this time, this intersection is not deemed a school zone.
We, the undersigned, urge our leaders of the the Washoe County School District and City of Reno to help protect our school children and also many residents in this area that use these crosswalks daily.
