Dear President,
We would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the death at sea of many men, women and children. Innocent and desperate human beings.
A tragic news arrived a few days ago. Little Loujin was only four years old. Her little sister, Mira, one and a half years old, is struggling to survive after drinking seawater for so many days. This is the story that comes from a boat with 60 migrants that left from Lebanon. The boat remained in the middle of the sea for more than 10 days in the Malta SAR without receiving rescue. The first to raise the alarm was the NGO Alarm Phone. The NGO on Twitter points to a boat that left from Lebanon and has been «on the way for ten days» «The boat is sinking, and they have no food or water» «Malta refuses to allow the merchant ship Sti Solace, which is in the area, to rescue them» «several merchant ships, including the Msc Nela and the Ha Long Bay, passed by her without help» while «water was entering the hull». Lebanese TV announced the rescue in Greece of the drifting boat with people from Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. But some did not survive, like little Loujin.
A story that repeats itself and reminds us of the fragility with which Europe fails to save the lives of even the most fragile beings ... children. A constant and cruel violation of human rights. We cannot stand by and watch. Europe cannot stand by and watch.
We want to remind you that refugees and migrants suffer extreme poverty in their countries of origin, kidnapping, rape, torture, slavery and sexual violence before attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
We ask for the coordination of humanitarian corridors to guarantee the right to asylum. A choice that will allow the avoidance of trafficking in human beings and other deaths at sea.
We ask to open safe and legal channels.
We are asking Europe to guarantee welcome and support.
We ask for an end to this constant and cruel violation of human rights.
