The RM of Gimli, Manitoba Council recently banned dog owners from walking their dogs on the boardwalk and grassy areas behind it at Gimli Beach, a right that both local and visiting dog owners have had since the town was founded in 1908.
They did this in a closed-door meeting and have justified their decision by saying it supports the area's recent Blue Flag certification, and that because of the 2013 bylaw banning dogs from the beach, they have the right to define the "beach" as including the boardwalk and the grassy areas behind it. This distinction has not been passed as legislation but is already being enforced.
When contacted, the Blue Flag organization has confirmed in writing that they have no issues with dogs being on the boardwalk. The Council is essentially banning dogs - with no input from their constituents - just because they want to.
This petition is intended to encourage the RM of Gimli Council to re-evaluate their position and welcome their constituents into the conversation to bring this issue to a positive resolution.
We, the undersigned, believe dog owners should be allowed to walk their dogs on a leash on the Gimli boardwalk and the grass behind it, and call on the RM of Gimli Council to revoke the bylaw banning dogs from the boardwalk area immediately.
