In 2011 Johns Hopkins University and East Baltimore Development Incorporated (EBDI) promised the Middle East community of East Baltimore a permanent home for the East Baltimore History Library (EBHL) in the new Henderson Hopkins School.
EBHL would collected oral histories in order to preserve the history of this proud, historic neighborhood.
In 2015 Johns Hopkins University broke their promise. Hopkins informed EBHL that the EBHL space had been built using public funding and had been given to Baltimore City Schools. As a result, East Baltimore Historical Library would never have a permanent home in Henderson Hopkins School.
Johns Hopkins University agreed with EBHL that it would be "insane" for the East Baltimore Historical Library to move into Henderson Hopkins.
EBHL then turned its sights to the former EBDI offices at 1704-1706 Chase Street. After more than three years of waiting for EBDI to sell the buildings to EBHL, the City took the buildings off the table.
Much like the 750 residents of Middle East, EBHL was displaced by Hopkins/EBDI and remains without a home.
We demand that Johns Hopkins University pay for the purchase of a suitable permanent home for EBHL, which will be owned by EBHL.
After years of being bullied, disrespected, and misled by Hopkins/EBDI; thousands of hours wasted in pointless meetings; and countless stories of Middle East residents that were lost when they moved on or passed; Johns Hopkins owes it to the Middle East Community to make EBHL whole.
Please sign this petition calling on Johns Hopkins University to pay for the purchase of a suitable permanent home for EBHL, which will be owned by EBHL, September 30, 2019
We the undersigned call on Johns Hopkins University to pay for the purchase of a suitable permanent home for EBHL, which will be owned by EBHL, by September 30, 2019.
