Hendra virus has a high mortality rate in horses and humans. There is currently NO vaccine or cure.
The species of flying foxes in Australia that are known to carry the Hendra Virus are listed as ‘vulnerable species’ under Conservation Acts. Each state also has their own Environmental Act and plans and the bottom line is that the Government is putting bats ahead of human life by starving vital funding to the research.
The Government not only wants us to protect the flying foxes, they prohibit destruction or harming them, therefore they have a moral and ethical obligation to protect us from these deadly diseases.
On Friday the 16th April 2009 a website called www.hendraawareness.com will be launched detailing alarming issues that highlight the urgent need for vital funding into finding a vaccine, post exposure treatment and also rapid testing.
A full covering submission to be included with this petition will be published on the website, and combined with signatures collected via a paper version of this petition.
This petition of concerned citizens draws to the attention of the Government the urgent need for vital funding into the laboratory research conducted at CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory, into the development of a vaccine, post exposure treatment and rapid stall-side testing kits.
