Proposed Petrie Paper Mill - Please protect and enhance the existing koala habitat. We need to keep the habitat for future generations to enjoy. Not clear it and plant another habitat somewhere else. These animals have already been caught, tagged, health-checked, monitored, then caught untagged and released. Now another project puts them at high risk of losing all their habitat to be moved to a site along the river, where no development will affect them if they survive all this. (Photo of a recent local Lawnton koala at the Lawnton Pool)
This proposed University site should benefit the beauty of the habitat enhancing the local area, which already has extremely way too much housing development as a result of development from the same river from Youngs Crossing, Todds Road, Lawnton Lakes (all of these will impact the river) as well as the major housing developments, as a result of, the mass clearing from the (MBRL) in Kallangur, Mango Hill, Murrumba, Kippa Ring. This is where technology and enhancing the Environmental beauty of what is existing, instead of clearing koala habitat.
The idea of planting koala habitat trees to offset koala habitat on a previous site of Hazardous Contaminants, with high PCBs/kg (after it has been dug out, filled in and planted) has not been done before and not healthy for the koalas already stressed from the above.
Note:
Moreton Bay Rail Link (MBRL) found there were 522 koalas. 22,000 trees were cleared. 281 koalas died throughout the project construction, along with many Australian Flora and Fauna species. Petrie site has the largest number of koalas left (being approx 80 koalas), the other having a lesser amount is at Kippa Ring at the other end of the rail.
The Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, We, the undersigned, call on the government to not clear the koala habitat in the Proposed Petrie Mill site where approximately 80 koalas that have survived being caught, tagged, vet-checked and cleared as healthy, monitored, untagged again (from the Moreton Bay Rail Link) and now under threat from a construction site already where the proposed Petrie Mill is now.
It is the largest and most healthy vet-checked site in Moreton Bay. Please enhance their habitat, not clear it for more housing/development.
