The Superintendent and the School Committee in Cumberland, Rhode Island have cut the funding for many things vital to our children's education for this and future years.
One of the most important cuts was the full-time teachers' aides. Our Kindergartens throughout the town are filled to capacity, and the teachers are trying to teach twice as many five-year-olds as they had in past years.
This year, B. F. Norton has 48 Kindergarten students, with no aides; during the 2005-2006 school year, B. F. Norton had a total of 28 Kindergarten students, WITH full-time teachers aides.
We, the undersigned, call on the Cumberland, Rhode Island School Committee to reinstate the full-time classroom aides in our elementary schools.
