Help change mail rules in Texas prisons

To: The Texas Department of Criminal Justice

We, the undersigned, ask you to reevaluate your rules stating that :

" magazines and newspapers may be mailed directly to the offender only by publisher, publication supplier or bookstore; subject to review and rejection in accordance with the correspondence rules. Stationary defined as coloured paper not to exceed the size of 81/2" x 11", or unstamped envelopes, including carbon paper, but excluding paper or envelopes with names, addresses or letterhead and excluding tablets or writing pads with stapled binding, may be mailed to offenders only from legitimate vendors or suppliers of stationary. Items such as food, clothing, jewelry and toiletries may not be mailed to offenders. Individuals may not mail packages to offenders." ( Texas Department of Criminal Justice website).

We, the undersigned, ask you to review this policy and allow offenders' families to send paper, envelopes, stamps to their loved ones in prison.

If offenders are allowed to be sent things to be able to write to their families this may take away a lot of frustration and anger they may be feeling as they would be able to talk to their families about how they feel and release their anger through their letters, cutting down on violence in prisons where an inmate may feel he has to take his anger out on somebody to get rid of it.

We also ask you to review your rules on packages not being allowed and allow families of offenders to send parcels to them, obviously within reason, but care packages if the offender is running low on basics and may have no money to go to commissionary, even if you review this rule for holidays such as Christmas and special occasions such as birthdays, that we may be able to send books etc. to our loved ones we feel this would be a step in the right direction.
