North Adams Community Schools Reconfiguration

United States of America

The North Adams Community Schools (NACS) administration has proposed a plan to change the current configuration of K-5 in all three elementary schools to a Pre-K to K at Monmouth, grades 1 and 2 at Southeast, and grades 3, 4 and 5 at Northwest.

The administration's claims of better education and supposed cost savings do not justify the negative effects of the proposed realignment, such as: the lack of continuity in the students' lives, the issue of siblings going to different schools, and therefore creating transportation and activity hardships on the family, parent volunteerism becoming more difficult at more than one school, the lack of a role model relationship that older students have with the younger students, added transportation costs for buses, and many other issues.

Several other school corporations that have reconfigured their schools the same as what is being proposed by the NACS administration are now moving back to the K-5 or K-8 model. They cite the issues above as reasons for moving back, as well as many others.

We urge community members to sign the petition below and ask that they encourage others to do the same.

We, the undersigned, oppose the North Adams Community Schools (NACS) reconfiguration proposal which will move the present K-5 elementary school format to a Pre-K to K at Monmouth, grades 1 and 2 at Southeast, and grades 3, 4 and 5 at Northwest format.

We, as concerned citizens, propose that the NACS School Board halt this reconfiguration plan, and that the current K-5 format be maintained at all three North Adams Elementary schools.
