The Haldane Board of Education has postponed the capital improvement project until the fall of 2008 in order to conduct the geothermal engineering study requested by the signers of the petition. Thank you to all who signed! For more information, see www.haldane-geo.org.
As part of the Capital Improvement Project to be voted on in May, the school board wants to replace the old oil burning heating system with a new oil system and continue to burn about 60,000 gallons of oil a year.
The school board decided not to conduct an engineering study to determine whether a more environmentally friendly geothermal heating/cooling system would make more sense, even though the state agency NYSERDA would share the cost of the study.
There is no question that the total cost of ownership of a geothermal system over the life of the system is a lot less than an oil burning system. However, the upfront capital cost of geothermal is more.
An engineering study is needed to get more accurate estimates of the installation and operational costs of geothermal versus oil and determine which system makes most sense to the taxpayers of the district.
Although the existing boilers are old, they can function a while longer while we determine the best long term solution.
We, the undersigned, request that the Haldane Board of Education:
(1) list the proposed upgrades to the heating/ventilation system as a separate proposition in the May Bond Referendum, and,
(2) include $20,000 in the 2008-2009 Operations Budget to fund an engineering feasibility study that includes geothermal.
