Having identified the key target groups who will receive the H1N1 vaccine, the DH also identified the groups of healthcare workers who would also be the first to be vaccinated.
However, the DH did not classify pharmacy within the group of healthcare workers who are directly involved in patient care, even though the pharmacy is often the first port of call for members of the public who seek advice regarding health issues.
The DH have stated that it is up to PCO's to make the decision whether to vaccinate pharmacy staff.
We, the undersigned, compel the Department of Health to update the "Green Book", identifying pharmacy as a NHS "front line" service and recognise that pharmacy should be included in the group of healthcare workers who are directly involved in patient care.
Therefore pharmacy should now be included in all of the vaccination programmes offered to "front line" NHS staff, including the H1N1 vaccination and seasonal influenza programmes.
