Daw (Mrs.) Aung San Suu Kyi is the greatest threat to Myanmar’s junta, the ruling military dictatorship. After her landslide victory in the 1990 elections, the junta has unjustly detained her by house arrest for the past 14 of the last 20 years permitting her no contact with the outside world except for her doctor, considering her political prowess a viable threat to their power.
Her moral leadership of the peaceful democracy movement and previous political victories point to the fact that she has the capacity to win in the elections next year, providing a perfect alibi for the junta to trump up unfair charges against her so she can be locked up in prison for the next five years, hence ineligible to compete.
On May 14, 2009, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and sent to jail, charged with violating the terms of her house arrest by harboring an American man who swam secretly to her lakeside home to warn her of a dream he had in which she would be assassinated. She provided him with food and shelter for two days, doing what any reasonable person would do in the same or similar circumstances. Suu Kyi argues that the charge is invalid since it is based on a 1974 constitution that was abolished in 1988.
At age 65 and in deteriorating medical health, Suu Kyi is currently being held at the notorious Insein prison known for its harsh interrogations, deprivation of basic necessities such as food and water, and torture http://www.khrg.org/khrg93/93_12_05.html
We, the undersigned, call on President Barack Obama to grant Nobel Peace Laureate Daw (Mrs.) Aung San Suu Kyi political asylum in the US if a negative verdict is returned at her trial.
