The Burlingame Intermediate School administration informed this year's annual BIS Poetry Slam participants that there poems were not allowed to say "inappropriate" things, such as the use of swear words like "lesbian, gay, whore, bitch, and slut," and topics deemed too mature for them, such as rape.
Several girls participating in the poetry slam were asked to change their poems because they contained inappropriate content.
Although it is understandable that the administration wants to protect these students, taking away students' rights to free expression does not seem to be a constructive way to help these students deal with the problems they are facing every day.
We, the undersigned, call upon the administration at Burlingame Intermediate School to allow students the right to free expression at the student-organized BIS poetry slam, including, but not limited to, the right to say swear words, drugs, alcohol, sex, rape, or "gay."
