As you may know, cheerleading is essential to many other sports teams especially in the U.S. Cheerleaders draw attention to the event and encourage audience participation. High School Cheerleading consists of a school spirit aspect and the competition aspect. The school spirit aspect of cheerleading involves cheering, supporting, and "pumping up" the crowd at football games, basketball games, even wrestling meets. With this they also make posters, perform at pep rallies, and bring school spirit to the other students.

If there were no cheerleaders in a high school, who else would encourage school spirit? Yes, the dancers put on a nice performance to get the crowd going, but who will keep them going before, during and after halftime? The answer to this question is of course, cheerleaders. Approximately 394,694 cheerleaders attend public high school according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. With this in mind, that should tell you that plenty of high schools have cheerleaders, so it would be sort of weird to have a high school without cheerleaders to promote school spirit.

It would also mean that a lot of students wouldn't have an extracurricular activity to go to if the sport they were involved in was taken away from them, making it harder for them to continue it in college. Now when Huntington High School in Long Island, NY starts having sporting events, who will cheer the crowd and athletes on and encourage them to win? What if the crowd is grumpy and decides not to "pump up" the team?

There wouldn't be any cheerleaders to solve it because the school wants to cut us out of the budget, despite our fundraising. If we continue to fundraise and contribute to our school, shouldn't we be able to continue motivating our peers to have school spirit?

We, the former cheerleaders and current students of Huntington High School, call on the Board of Education to put cheerleading back on the budget if we continue to fundraise.

The Get Cheerleading Back in Huntington High petition to Board of Education was written by Kierah Thompson and is in the category Sports at GoPetition.
