Dr. Mohamad Nour Audi, a Syrian Red Crescent medic, was arrested by Assad's security forces on March 24, 2012. Since then he has been held in detention at a secret facility. Thus, he is at grave risk of torture and other mistreatment.
As a result of this and other hostile acts taken in Syria by the Assad regime, The Syrian Arab Red Crescent has decided to suspend its activities in various parts of the country, affirming that it has not received protection from the Syrian government which instead is obligated to allow it to carry out all of its interventions in safety.
The Syrian Red Crescent have been accused by Assad's forces of being “untrustworthy” and their crucial work has been undermined, as they have been deemed by the concerned authorities as not being “neutral”. In addition to this, several of their volunteers have lost their lives.
WHEREAS: The arrest and continued imprisonment of Dr. Mohamad Nour Audi, a Syrian Red Crescent medic, are in violation of both national and international laws, including Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (dealing with arbitrary detention);
And WHEREAS torture is illegal in Syria under international law as well as Article 29 (3) of the Syrian Constitution;
And WHEREAS Dr. Mohamad Nour Audi is clearly a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for his peaceful humanitarian work and for whose saftey, health and over-all well being the security forces and the regime of President Assad itself are responsible;
THEREFORE, we demand that the Syrian government IMMEDIATELY and UNCONDITIONALLY release Mohamad Nour Audi and all other political prisonerse whose detention and mistreatment violates both Syrian and international law.
We further demand that the Assad regime IMMEDIATELY cease and desist in all hostile actions against the Red Crescent and their humanitarian efforts.
