Saleh Kohandel is a political prisoner in Ward 4 of the Karaj Rajaei Shahr Prison who has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for collaborating with anti- regime groups. He is imprisoned in Karaj’s notorious Rajai-Shahr Prison
According to a report by Human Rights Activists for Democracy in Iran, on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, prisoners of conscience Saleh Kohandel, Behrouz Javid Tehrani, Mohammad Ali Mansouri and Farzad Maddadzadeh have been locked up in isolation cells in Sepa Ward of Rajai-Shahr. No reason has been announced for this transfer.
This is not the first time Saleh Kohandel has suffered abuse in the horrible conditions of Raji=SHahr prison. In December 2010 it was reported that he had been attacked and beaten by a mentally ill inmate.
Some of the prisoners confined in the Gohardasht Prison are suffering from mental disorders and the prison conditions have exacerbated their problems.
The person who attacked Saleh Kohandel had recently been released from a mental hospital and was confined in Ward 4 which is a general ward instead of being transferred to the special protected centers for prisoners with mental disorders.
The health of the prisoners has to be confirmed by the physicians before entering the ward but this policy has not been implemented in the Gohardasht Prison.
Many prisoners are suffering from psychological disorders and attack and harm other inmates for no reason.
We the undersigned demand that the international community bring all pressure to bear on the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately and unconditionally release Saleh Kohandel and all other prisoners of conscience in Iran.
