Flowers Canada pushed for a regulation to be passed (farm products marketing act - o.reg. 316/08) that all greenhouse growers that are over 20,000 square feet, grow bedding and potted plants be forced into paying a yearly membership fee. The membership fee is calculated on the square feet of growing area. A greenhouse with 35000 sq feet of growing area would have to pay a $700.00/year fee. This even applies to growers that only are seasonal.
With today's increasing prices on fuel and plastics, we are struggling as it is. Voting slips were sent out to roughly 352 growers in Ontario by mail. Out of the 352 only 52% voted. From the 52% that voted, roughly 74% voted yes. I was one of the growers that disagreed with the mandatory membership fees. I assume that the 48% that didn't vote either did not receive it or threw it out thinking it was junk mail. This petition is for the greenhouse growers in Ontario that have 20000 or more sq feet, that are being forced into paying a yearly membership fee to Flowers Canada.
