Fathers in Canada after divorce are often removed from their children's lives or reduced to a part time parent. 53.3% of custody is awarded to moms with another 37.2% as joint.
Joint custody is not equal shared parenting in fact in most joint custody arrangements the primary caregiver is still mom and dads are still visiting uncles at best. 9.1% of custody awards go to dads. Custody and access issues dominate family courts and not only does the system and lawyers profit but most often fathers are reduced to near poverty.
In most cases a child is reduced to limited visitation with their fathers and the toll on them (the children) is high.
63% of youth suicides.
71% of pregnant teenagers.
90% of all homeless and runaway children.
71% of all high school dropouts.
80% of rapists motivated with displaced anger.
85% of all youths sitting in prisons.
Need I say more? The toll our children face in fatherless homes is astronomical.
Custody and Joint custody are not doing the job. If two grown adults cannot get along in marriage, so be it. But the courts must reform and make Equal Shared Parenting the default order. Will it hurt somebody? Yes, lawyers will lose millions of dollars in revenue.
Who will it help? It will keep that money in the families who need to to raise their children. It will stop frivolous accusations, false allegations, and sensationalism
out of play and eliminate wasted court time.
We, the undersigned, call on the government of Canada to change the family court laws to mandate Equal Shared Parenting unless a parent is found beyond a reasonable doubt to be unfit.
