The TV license appears to be a serious violation of articles 81 and 82 of the European treaties as it causes distortion of the common market.

BBC has a financial advantage over its competitors, can exercise restrictions to its competitors' services and has access to additional funding so the license is no longer necessary and is prohibited under the above instruments.

It may also constitute illegal state aid to BBC by UK government as government collects the fee and passes it on to BBC.

We, the undersigned, call on the UK government to end the system of compulsory licensing of television receivers on the grounds that this is a flagrant breach of EU competition rules which gives the BBC a financial advantage over its competitors, allows BBC to restrict access to its competitors’ services and therefore distorts the common market as prohibited under articles 81 and 82 of the European treaties.
