Grimsby Town FC have banned any interviews to Radio Humberside with players and club management.
This was after Radio Humberside presenter David Burns made remarks which caused offence to Grimsby chairman John Fenty. Burns, as an independent journalist working for the BBC, should not be expected just to be a mouthpiece for the club. None of his remarks are understood to have broken any rules or regulations, written or unwritten.
Radio Humberside is the only radio station in the world to regularly cover Mariners games. Grimsby fans need access to interviews with players and management on the radio as part of following their favourite team. The club also need the publicity of local radio, and of the BBC organisation, to help it raise over 700,000 pounds to pay off a tax bill and stay in business.
I call on Grimsby Town Football Club to end the ban on interviews with Radio Humberside.
