Emblem Academy Wednesday Dismissal & Traffic Review

Every Wednesday, the vast majority of students at Emblem Academy are dismissed at 12:40 p.m. A small number of students in specialized programs are dismissed slightly earlier, but the overwhelming majority of students are released at the same time.

This creates a large and highly concentrated number of parents, vehicles, pedestrians, and young children arriving in and around the school simultaneously.

The surrounding streets experience significant congestion during this period, creating difficult traffic conditions and increasing the number of vehicles and pedestrians moving through the area at once. For families picking up younger children in particular, the concentration of traffic can make dismissal unnecessarily stressful and potentially less safe than it needs to be.

Parking in the immediate area is also extremely limited during Wednesday dismissal. Families who cannot find space close to the school are often left with the option of parking a significant distance away and walking back to campus. Some families also use parking near a neighboring church, although it is not clear whether that parking is formally designated for school use and it can quickly become full. Others park along streets or in areas serving nearby businesses, which can create additional congestion and inconvenience for those businesses and their customers.

We fully recognize that parents are responsible for parking legally and that limited parking is a reality around many schools. However, the concern is not simply the availability of parking. The larger issue is that the current Wednesday schedule concentrates almost the entire school’s dismissal into one short period, placing substantial pressure on the surrounding roads, available parking, neighboring properties, and pedestrian areas all at once.

We are asking Emblem Academy and the Saugus Union School District to review the current Wednesday dismissal process and consider practical alternatives that could reduce congestion and improve safety. Possible solutions could include staggered dismissal times by grade level, revised pickup procedures, additional traffic-management measures, or other approaches the school and district believe would be workable.

The purpose of this petition is not to prescribe one specific solution, but to demonstrate that a number of Emblem Academy families believe the current Wednesday dismissal process should be reviewed and that there may be opportunities to make dismissal safer, smoother, and less disruptive for students, families, neighboring residents, and local businesses.
