Thank you for your support, combine with the sign ins; we have gather more than 300 signatures. Due to changes to the EMS service, the petition is no longer valid.
This petition is against Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS), specifically with the Scarborough Centenary Hospital.
We represent seniors who live in Long Term Care Homes. The Ministry of Health waives the transportation cost if a senior is classified as "medically necessary".
Scarborough Centenary Hospital is the ONLY hospital in Scarborough that charges a $200 transportation fee for patients that are deemed "medically unnecessary" upon discharge.
Upon discharge from the hospital (as"medically unnecessary"), a $200 transportation cost was charged to seniors who uses the EMS system. Some of them has no other means of transportation except to use the ambulance service provider. This included seniors that are on stretchers or have very limited mobility.
The amount charged is outrageous especially for some with fixed government income. They could have as little as $130 left after paying the Long Term Care Home monthly rent. To be sick and have to worry about extra expenditure creates unnecessary stress and burden for seniors and their families which are not necessary.
We urge the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Scarborough Centenary Hospital to waive the fee or sharply reduce the cost to a more affordable level to meet the needs of ALL other senior groups as well.
We the undersigned are of the opinion that the transportation cost to LTC Home and other facilities upon discharge from the hospital after an emergency visit, appointment or hospital stay is too costly.
Most seniors who live in LTC are on a fixed income. The high cost of ambulance transportation for discharging from Hospital to the LTC often exceeds their already low budget. To be sick and to have to worry about extra expenditure creates unnecessary stress and burden for seniors and their families.
We urge the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Hospital to waive the ambulance transportation fees or to lower the cost that is affordable by the seniors.
