Canada has been recognized internationally as a leader in raising public awareness of abuse of older adults and in developing innovative and respectful approaches to dealing with "Elder Abuse". Actions that harm an older person or jeopardize the person's health or welfare is known as elder abuse.
According to the World Health Organization, abuse and neglect of older adults can be a single or a repeated act. It can occur in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust or where a person is in a position of power or authority.
Abuse can be physical, emotional, verbal, financial, sexual and spiritual. Financial abuse is considered the most common form of abuse of older adults. Neglect can also be part of abuse. Neglect involves not doing something, such as not providing the older person with food, shelter, medication, or care. Elders often experience more than one form of abuse and neglect.
For example, they may be emotionally and financially abused, or emotionally and physically abused. Some older adults may be neglected and have their rights violated.
We are the Social Justice and Action Network, a group of concerned citizens fighting for the rights of abused elder adults. We are petitioning for them to have the right to live a life that is free from abuse, violence, and neglect. We realize that access to own property is a major obstruction and oppression for the elderly.
We insist that the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care facilities implement a system whereby the elderly have rights and access to their own property and are protected from all forms of abuse and violence.
Amendment to Bill 21 (Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority Act)

AND WHEREAS all citizens are entitled to social and economic security;
AND WHEREAS many seniors live on fixed incomes;
AND WHEREAS many seniors are victims of physical, emotional or financial abuse.
