Right now in Philadelphia a new teacher's contract is being negotiated. The contract can have a huge impact on how we attract, retain, train, support and assign teachers. We are asking the Mayor, the Superintendent and the President of the teacher’s union (the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers) to support changes that will positively impact the way teachers are trained and assigned, and to make those changes a reality in Philadelphia schools right away.
“Effective Teaching for Every Child” is supported by a coalition that is comprised of the following organizations: Philadelphia Cross City Campaign for School Reform, Education Voters of PA, ACORN, Education Law Center, Good Schools PA, Philadelphia Education Fund, Philadelphia Student Union, and Youth United for Change.

We support the following provisions in the Philadelphia teacher contract:
School-Based Hiring: The principal, staff, teachers, community members and parents should get to review resumes, conduct interviews and choose the best applicants for openings.
Stronger Teacher Incentives: We need to provide good incentives, such as support staff, experienced mentors and collaboration time, to help draw teachers to more challenging assignments.
High Professional Standards and Evaluations: Teachers need useful and timely feedback from their peers and their principal. They need time to collaborate and learn form one another.
Improve Teacher Training and Development: We need to make sure that training and development are customized to help fully develop teaching skills.
