The severe downsizing of the fishing industry in the last 10 years has resulted in the collapse of Malcolm Island's economy. Many families have been forced to move off Malcolm Island. The economies of Cormorant Island and northern Vancouver Island have also been negatively impacted by the shrinking job opportunities in the resource sector.
New opportunities for employment are needed to replace the fishing industry if Malcolm Island wants to become more than a vacation and retirement destination. Work opportunities for people living on Cormorant and Vancouver Island would also be improved if residents had earlier transportation to the other islands.
A ferry service does exist but the current sailing schedule does not match the needs of Malcolm Island job seekers. Many Vancouver Island employers will not hire Malcolm Islanders because they can't get to work on time. Also, the current schedule could be improved for Cormorant and Vancouver Island workers. In addition, vital medical transportation supports are often not available to Malcolm Islanders because they can't get to Vancouver Island early enough in the morning.
We, the undersigned, request that the Tri-island Ferry Committee, the Regional District of Mount Waddington, Community Futures of Mount Waddington and BC Ferries take immediate and effective action to promote changing the BC Ferries' schedule so that Malcolm, Cormorant and Vancouver Islanders have access to early morning employment opportunities and early morning medical transportation supports.
