Thank you to everyone who signed the petition online and on paper. We succeeded in making Highways England think again and the changes to the A1 will include a connection to South West Denton at Birchfield Gardens - well done!
Highways England is proposing to close the access road to the A1 northbound sliproad at Birchfield Gardens, South West Denton (junction 75).
This is a vital link that was created for residents of South West Denton and Dumpling Hall when the A1 was constructed to allow easy access onto the A1 and West Road. It moves traffic onto main roads quickly ensuring that pressure on local estate roads is minimised.
This proposal will have a massive impact on many local residents, increasing traffic on the West Road as well as Neptune Road, Lemington Road Ends and Union Hall Road. It will make many estate roads less safe for children as traffic is increased. Many of the closest services to South West Denton are to the east of A1 and the proposed closure of the slip road will substantially increase journey times by car at the busiest times of the day.
We the undersigned demand that Highways England rethink plans to close the northbound slip road to the A1 at Birchfield Gardens, South West Denton and we call on Newcastle City Council to object formally to the proposal.
