Collierville currently has no dog parks. The City Parks Department has plans to open a new dog park, located at its animal shelter and remote from its City Parks and main residential subdivisions. The general public is not aware of its estabishment nor of who recommended it, how the location was determined, who provided the planning, and if any polling of public opinion was involved.
A clear desire for a dog park exists as evidenced by 400 signature collected in less than two weeks seeking a neighborhood dog park. Recent increase of local leash laws in remote areas of our city parks, by both the Police Department and Animal Control, indicates a coerced effort to steer dog owning citizens to a new dog park which the citizens at this time have no knowledge. The Parks Department and City Government is, in effect, using coercive methods to accomplish a goal to serve their own self interests without concern or input from the end users of the proposed service to be provided.
We, the tax payers of Collierville, TN, seek the creation of an official, off-leash dog park at:
W.C. Johnson Park
419 Johnson Park Drive Collierville, TN 38017
OR
another suitable site central to the subdivisions located in the zipcode 38017 servicing the largest residential area of Collierville, Tennessee.
Located at Wolf Ridge Drive and Johnson Park Drive this 135-acre park is unique to the Collierville Park System because of its proximity to the Wolf River Corridor.
An off-leash area can benefit the community in many ways: dog parks keep the animals away from children and people who don’t like them, they help keep other public spaces free of feces, they promote responsible pet ownership, they promote public health and safety since the dogs using the park must be licensed and vaccinated.
Dog parks provide a tool for enforcing dog control laws because well-socialized dogs are less aggressive towards people and other dogs. For elderly and disabled people, a dog park is often the only accessible place to bring their companions to socialize. Dog parks also foster community feeling -- dog park users get to know each other well. For attracting newcomers to the Collierville area, and sustaining the younger demographic, dog parks are desirable neighborhood amenities.
Dog parks are the answer to dogs running loose in public areas! Off-leash dog parks provide a place for dogs to socialize with each other, getting the physical and mental exercise they need to be good companions and good neighbors. Dog parks are not a fad; they are being created across the U.S. every month due to the combined efforts of community groups and local governments.
It's time that tax paying dog owners and their dogs have a place where they can get the off-leash exercise. They need to be happy, healthy members of the community.
