The residents of Masiphumelele and neighbouring communities are demanding that another primary school in Masiphumelele be built. There are kids who have been turned away who are playing on the streets even after the school year has started. A school was built in Ocean View at the end of 2018 and it has been filled already with majority being Masiphumelele residents kids. There are approx. 42 kids in a class at Ukhanyo Primary School and 50+ children on the waiting list. The recommended amount of kids per class should not exceed 32 children. This means the school is over subscribed by 280 kids, this excluding the children on the waiting list. This is in addition to the three primary schools in nearby Ocean View that are also over subscribed. The problem is not going to improve, it is only going to get worse as the population grows. It is vital that these children are accommodated appropriately as education is a basic human right.
We, the undersigned, strongly call on the Western Cape Education Department to provide schooling facilities in the Southern Peninsula area of Cape Town, most notably in the suburb of Masiphumelele.
