- Target:
- The Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council
- Region:
- United Kingdom
Changes are being imposed by central Government on Brighton & Hove City Council’s decision-making structure, which will affect our system of local democracy.
Decisions are currently made by cross-party committees whose membership reflects the political make-up of the council. We are being forced to adopt a Leader & Cabinet system, and it is unlikely that opposition councillors will continue to have the right to speak and make representations on behalf of the communities they represent.
We have until May 2009 to adopt the new system, but the Conservative minority administration is trying to rush these changes through by May 2008. We believe more time is needed for proper public consultation, to ensure that the best possible system which fairly represents the differing views of people across the city is implemented.
This petition is directed at Cllr Brian Oxley, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, who has it in his gift to extend the consultation period.
We, the undersigned, call upon Councillor Brian Oxley, the Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, to extend the period of public consultation regarding changes to the local authority’s governance arrangements.
