For those that agree; The Stretch of the Regents Canal from Islington to Lime House needs "cycle traffic" calming measures to curtail what has now become a "cycle commuters" high-speed cycle-way, making leisurely cycling, walking or running a dangerous pursuit on the towpath.
I am a regular commuter cyclist myself, as well as a amateur road race cyclist and runner. I use the canal, not to commute, but for leisurely weekend cycles and morning runs and walks.
I feel personally that due to the lack of cycle traffic calming on this stretch of the canal, commuter cyclist are taking it as there own, cycling at ridiculous speeds and not dismounting or even slowing under bridges. There are some long stretches of the canal where cyclist reach incredible speeds, bullying pedestrians off the towpath by ringing there bells aggressively. It is my understanding , that, by the laws of the tow path, considerate cyclists are allowed to use the towpath with pedestrians having full priority.
In my opinion wide handle bar mountain bikes and performance racing bikes, have no place on the towpath. Cyclists are using the stretch as a super-fast highway to there places of work, endangering pedestrians, dog walkers and runners.
This problem escalates in the summer months with some totally inexperienced and reckless cyclists, that actually risk there own safety as well as others.
I feel, before each bridge, and long stretch towpath, there should be offset bars and risen cobbled strips much like the one used on the camden/maida-vale sections, to slow riders right down.
Even, as a fast and early solution, new signs; "pedestrian priority" towpath warnings and "bridge cyclists dismount" signs over the bridges themselves would be a good start to address the problem.
