The price of renting or buying is increasing tremendously for housing in Astoria and LIC. This is a result of gentrification, which is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to upper middle-class taste. The price of living is getting higher and higher and people are being forced to move and give up their homes for people who have the money. To add on, in most cases, when some people move out of their building, the owner of the complex would rebuild and modernize their apartment in order to increase the monthly rent. The people that make Astoria as diverse as it is can no longer afford to live in this neighborhood.
We want more rent-stabilized apartments in Astoria. We want to protect low income families from experiencing the impacts of gentrification. No more increasing rent!
