Presidents should not have the power to pardon themselves. They should also not have the power to pardon family members and other close relatives.

Some experts say the president does not currently have the power to pardon themselves. But other experts disagree. A constitutional amendment is needed to make it unequivocally clear that the president does not have that power.

How close of a relative is too close? A president should not be able to pardon a cousin, niece, or nephew, but a fifth cousin seven times removed should not count as a close relative. This petition will leave it to congress to define exactly how close of a relative cannot be pardoned.

We, the undersigned, call on the United States Senate and House of Representatives to officially propose a constitutional amendment that the President of the United States does not have the power to pardon themselves, and does not have the power to pardon family members and other close relatives.
